Coaches Announced for St. John’s NBL Franchise

St. John’s, NL – Another day of firsts for the NBLC’s newest franchise as St. John’s has named their first coach who will lead the yet to be named team into their inaugural season.

Jeff Dunlap of Apex, North Carolina has been named head coach for St. John’s and he will be joined by Doug Plumb of Port Moody, British Columbia.  Both coaches bring with them a wealth of experience which will be an asset to the newest organization in the National Basketball League of Canada.

Dunlap brings with him over 30 years of coaching experience.  He was most recently an Assistant Coach with North Carolina State University from 2011-2017.  During his tenure with North Carolina State, the team went to four NCAA Tournaments and two Sweet 16’s.  Prior to his time at NC State, Dunlap was an Assistant Coach and Director of Operations with the University of Alabama (2007-2010), an Assistant Coach with Western Michigan University (2004-2007 and 2010-2011), and an Assistant Coach with the University of Georgia (October 1999-April 2003) as well as other stops along the way during his time as a coach in the American College ranks.  Dunlap’s coaching journey has allowed him to coach in 5 Major Division 1 Conferences. He also served as a Head Coach at College of the Canyons, a Junior College in California. During his playing days, Dunlap was a 3 year letterman for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a member of the 1985 NIT Championship team. Coach Dunlap was also the Director and Founder of the California based Complete Player Basketball which ran camps from 1989 until 2012.  Dunlap has also shared the court with the legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden and long time NBA Coach Pat Riley during various basketball camps.

Plumb was most recently the Head Assistant Coach, Head of Player Development, and Head Scout and Basketball Operations for the London Lightning (NBLC) during their 2016-2017 Championship Season.  Plumb was described as a vital piece of the success which the Lightning experienced last season.  A coach with a tremendous work ethic and an even better feel for the game.  Prior to getting into the coaching fraternity, Plumb was a professional player with FIBA from 2013-2015.  He was captain of the UBC Varsity Men’s Basketball Team from 2011-2013, while also being recognized as a CIS All-Canadian in 2013.  Plumb is also the Founder and Owner of Vancouver Basketball, INC which has created on-court basketball curriculum for NBA Athlete Academy Training amongst other duties as a part of this organization.

“I am excited about the opportunity to lead the St. John’s organization on the court as a part of this growing and expanding league,” stated Jeff Dunlap. “During my career, I have had the opportunity to see many of my players make it to the NBA and various leagues around the world. Having the chance to step into professional basketball this season will allow me to share some of the same experiences my players have enjoyed over the years.  I have spent a lot of time at the college level and I am looking forward to getting started in the pro game with St. John’s.  Being a part of a new professional team in St. John’s is a challenge which I am excited about and it will be wonderful to see the community and the support that the great sports fans of Newfoundland and Labrador will bring to this team.”

“On behalf of the ownership group, we are delighted to welcome Jeff as our head coach‎ and Doug as our Assistant Coach. We are committed to building a strong and competitive team in St. John’s. We respect that we have knowledgeable and passionate fans and we look forward to many more announcements in the near future,” said John Graham, Atlantic Sport Enterprises Ltd.

The first game for St. John’s in their inaugural season will be November 18th when they tip off against the Island Storm of Prince Edward Island on the road. Newfoundland and Labrador basketball fans will have their first glimpse of the province’s newest pro team when they hit the court at Mile One Centre on December 1st for a weekend series against the Niagara River Lions.  The St. John’s franchise will finish their first home stand with games against the defending champions, London Lightning on December 5th and 6th.
